Between 2019 and 2020, SML has been contracted by the European Union delegation in Algeria to provide assistance in drawing up Algeria's National Strategy for the Blue Economy (SNEB) for 2030.
The aim of the mission was twofold:
- Support the authorities in formulating the national strategy for promoting the blue economy and sustainable management of the country's coastal and marine areas.
- Identify and formulate a support programme for the fisheries sector, integrating sustainable management of fisheries resources, protection of marine ecosystems, social inclusiveness and coordination with other sectoral actions.
Within the consortium, SML participated in the comprehensive stakeholder analysis of the action, in supporting the authorities to engage in a dynamic consultation process, and in drafting a blueprint for a national blue economy strategy, together with a proposed budgeted action plan.
Following on from this first project, SML has been contracted in 2021 by Expertise France to contribute to the detailed definition and implementation of the " programme "particularly for its "innovation and international cooperation" component.
Based on a mapping of Algerian marine research, a dynamic inventory of international research programmes in which Algerian researchers are involved, and interviews and field visits, the aim is to develop an action plan to strengthen international cooperation in key technical areas for the country.
At the same time, In 2022, SML was contracted by GIZ (a German development agency) to develop and run training courses on Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) for the staff of the Algerian administrations concerned..
