L'Greater North Sea Basin Initiative (GNSBI) was officially established in November 2023, setting a framework for collaboration between the nine North Sea countries (Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and the United Kingdom), in order to strengthen cooperation in the field of maritime spatial planning.
GNSBI thus aims to provide a regional platform for the spatial integration of all uses, by formulating proposals for better harmonisation of maritime spatial planning (MSP), more efficient management processes and coordination of sectoral interests across borders, in order to meet the spatial and ecological challenges of the North Sea.
Within the consortium led by Ecorys, SML provides technical and administrative support to the co-presidents of GNSBI and mobilizes its expertise for the proper implementation of the working groups dedicated to fishing and multipurpose use at sea.in close collaboration with GNSBI member states.
Our team, in particular, produced a summary note («briefing paper») for the fisheries working group, intended to communicate clearly and non-technically the scientific study published by the group (Spatial challenges of Greater North Sea fisheries : Greater North Sea Basin Initiative) in 2026.
