The Greater North Sea Basin Initiative (GNSBI) was officially created in November 2023, establishing a framework for collaboration between the nine North Sea countries (Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and the United Kingdom) to strengthen cooperation in maritime spatial planning.
GNSBI thus aims to provide a regional platform for the spatial integration of all uses, by formulating proposals for better harmonisation of maritime spatial planning (MSP), more efficient management processes and coordination of sectoral interests across borders, in order to meet the spatial and ecological challenges of the North Sea.
Within the consortium led by Ecorys, SML provides technical and administrative support to the GNSBI co-chairs. In particular, SML mobilises its expertise for the successful implementation of the working groups dedicated to fisheries and multi-use at sea, in close collaboration with the GNSBI member states.
