Between 2010 and 2014, SML was involved in the IMP-MED project, aimed at fostering convergence towards the principles of the EU Integrated Maritime Policy (IMP) in the Southern Mediterranean countries. The consortium was responsible for providing technical assistance to national and regional stakeholders, developing a common understanding of IMP concepts and issues.
Building on the momentum initiated, SML was subsequently engaged in the IMP-CC project launched in 2017, with the objective of supporting concrete projects to demonstrate the benefits of the blue economy approach for the local economy and jobs in the region, and strengthening regional frameworks for policy dialogue and experience sharing on climate action and IMP between beneficiary countries and the European Union, in the Mediterranean context (Union for the Mediterranean, UNEP/MAP). The consortium was in charge of capacity building of national focal points, awareness raising of stakeholders, identification of synergies with existing projects and initiatives, and carrying out technical studies on the Marine and Coastal Capital and maritime sectors of the 8 countries involved.
